Paragon Capital Management's Q3 vs. Q4 2022 Holdings: Winners and Losers
Ava Hoppe | 24 April, 2023
2022 has been an interesting year for many investors. Buoyed by strong economic indicators and record-low unemployment figures, the markets have continued to see aggressive gains over the past several quarters. For Paragon Capital Management LLC, the third and fourth quarters were no exception. Yet, even the best investment firms have holdings that fluctuate in value. In this blog post, we will take a look at how Paragon's Q3 vs. Q4 2022 holdings have changed, and which issuers came out on top.
First up is Apple Inc (AAPL). According to the report, Paragon held 105,766 shares in AAPL during Q3, with a value of $14,617,000. By Q4, they had sold some of their shares, leaving them with 104,692 and a value of $13,602,000. While this still places AAPL as a top-performing issuer in Paragon's portfolio, the value decrease of 6.9% between quarters was not insignificant.
In contrast, Nike Inc (NKE) saw a 40.2% increase in value for Paragon during the same period. In Q3, Paragon held 67,876 shares in NKE, worth $5,642,000. This grew to 67,583 shares and a value of $7,907,000 by Q4. What factors contributed to this increase is unclear, but the footwear giant has seen solid sales growth in recent years, with a revenue increase of 16% year over year in their most recent quarter.
The report also showed a significant value increase for Jacobs Solutions Inc (J). In Q3, Paragon held 59,210 shares in J, worth $6,424,000. By Q4, the value of those shares had grown to $7,014,000, an increase of 9.2%. Jacbos Solutions Inc is a global provider of technical services and specializes in engineering, construction, and maintenance.
Another major player in Paragon's portfolio is international conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway Inc Del (BRK-B). In both Q3 and Q4, Paragon held 3,134 shares of the company, representing a $837,000 value in both quarters. Yet, while the value remained constant, the market price grew from $266.42 in Q3 to $308.68 in Q4, an increase of 15.7%.
On the losing side of things, Amazon Com Inc (AMZN) saw a 28.7% decrease in value for Paragon between Q3 and Q4. In Q3, Paragon held 56,954 shares in the company, valued at $6,436,000. By Q4, they had sold some of those shares outright, leaving them with holdings worth $4,589,000. This decrease could likely be traced back to the potential impact of antitrust investigations into the company.
Overall, Paragon Capital Management LLC's Q3 vs. Q4 2022 holdings show a mix of strong performers and holdings that have decreased in value. AAPL, while still a top-performing issuer in the portfolio, saw a value decrease of 6.9% between quarters. On the other hand, Nike Inc (NKE) saw a 40.2% increase in value, while Jacobs Solutions Inc (J) and Berkshire Hathaway Inc Del (BRK-B) saw increases of 9.2% and 15.7%, respectively. While these individual value shifts can seem small in the grand scheme of things, they reveal the volatility and unpredictability of financial markets and the need for firms to stay vigilant in their investment strategies.
