Ava Hoppe | 23 April, 2023
Vigilant Capital Management, LLC recently released its Q3 vs. Q4 2022 13F holdings comparison, revealing some interesting changes in its portfolio. The company manages over $1 billion in assets, and its holdings include 54 stocks and ETFs. After analyzing the comparative data, we can see winners, losers, and big surprises.
First, let's look at the biggest winners in the portfolio. JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM) saw an increase in shares by 1,670, alongside a whopping 27.6% increase in the value of the Q4 2022 portfolio compared to Q3. This boost came against the backdrop of a strong quarter for JPMorgan that included surpassing Wall Street forecasts for fourth-quarter earnings.
Two other winners in the portfolio were Waste Management, Inc. (WM) and Pfizer Inc. (PFE). Although Waste Management saw a drop in shares held in Q4, the Q3 value of the asset was $27.8 million compared to $26.6 million in Q4, which represents a 4.5% increase in value. For PFE, Q4 saw a slight decrease in share holding, but the asset's value rose from $3.7 million in Q3 to $4.3 million in Q4, marking a 16.3% increase. This increase was driven by PFE's impressive quarterly earnings.
Now, let's dive into the biggest losers. Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN) saw its value in Vigilant Capital Management's portfolio drop by 32% from Q3 to Q4. This reduction resulted from the tech giant's weak earnings, which missed Wall Street estimates. AbbVie Inc. (ABBV) also experienced a decrease in portfolio value by 8.5%, although it saw an increase in share holding.
The biggest surprise in this portfolio has to be ConocoPhillips (COP), which saw a staggering increase in portfolio value of 2,568% from $753 thousand in Q3 to $20.1 million in Q4. This jump resulted from a significant rise in the energy company's stock price following a $16 billion acquisition, which gave rise to optimism around the future growth prospects of the company. It remains to be seen whether this growth will be sustained, but it has certainly made ConocoPhillips one of the most interesting assets in Vigilant Capital Management's portfolio.
In conclusion, Vigilant Capital Management's Q3 vs. Q4 2022 13F holdings comparison reveals some interesting winners, losers, and significant surprises. JPMorgan Chase & Co., Waste Management, Inc., and Pfizer Inc. were among the winners, while Amazon.com, Inc. and AbbVie Inc. experienced drops in portfolio value. The most impressive performance of the quarter came from ConocoPhillips, with a spectacular rise of over 2,500% in portfolio value. It will be worth watching this company's progress in the coming months and seeing whether other energy stocks will follow suit.
