A Look into Oarsman Capital, Inc.'s Q3 and Q4 2022 13F Holdings

Ava Hoppe | 8 May, 2023

When it comes to the stock market, changes are expected. As investors and traders, we know that stock prices rise and fall, and that holdings in funds are not immune from these changes. Among the many funds in the market, Oarsman Capital, Inc. is one of the many institutional investors that file 13F Holdings reports in the United States.

For those unfamiliar, 13F is a quarterly report filed by institutional investment managers with at least $100 million in equity assets under management. This report is used by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to monitor institutional investor holdings and is publicly available. Now that we got that out of the way let's dive into Oarsman Capital, Inc.'s Q3 and Q4 2022 holdings and see how they compare.

In Q3 2022, Oarsman Capital, Inc. had 30 stocks in their portfolio. However, this number decreased to 29 in Q4 2022. In Q3, their top holding was SCHWAB INTERNATIONAL EQUITY ETF, with 308,562 shares and a value of $8,680,000, followed by ALPHABET INC CAP STK CL C with 85,823 shares and a value of $8,252,000. Meanwhile, in Q4, their top holding was also SCHWAB INTERNATIONAL EQUITY ETF, with 284,407 shares and a value of $9,160,000, followed by ALPHABET INC CAP STK CL C with 88,634 shares and a value of $7,864,000.

So, what changed? Let's take a closer look at the numbers. SCHWAB INTERNATIONAL EQUITY ETF dropped 5.5% in value, but despite this, it remained Oarsman Capital, Inc.'s top holding in both Q3 and Q4. Similarly, ALPHABET INC CAP STK CL C fell by 4.7% in Q4, yet it remained their second-largest holding.

MICROSOFT CORP COM came in third for Oarsman Capital, Inc. in both Q3 and Q4 with 31,499 shares worth $7,336,000 and 31,065 shares worth $7,449,000, respectively. Although the number of shares fell, the value of the shares increased by 1.6%.

Another stock that increased in value was SPDR PORTFOLIO S&P 600 SMALL CAP ETF, with a growth of 6.1% and 193,190 shares worth $6,580,000 in Q3 and 188,905 shares worth $6,983,000 in Q4.

Two funds that saw double-digit percentage growth were SPDR PORTFOLIO S&P 500 VALUE ETF and SPDR PORTFOLIO S&P 500 GROWTH ETF, with 11.2% and 16.6% growth, respectively.

However, not all holdings increased in value. ISHARES GOLD TRUST MICRO ETF OF BENEF INTEREST saw a decline in value by 70.3%, which resulted in a decrease in Oarsman Capital, Inc.'s total portfolio value.

In summary, whilst Oarsman Capital, Inc. had a decrease in their total portfolio value in Q4 compared to Q3, several holdings increased in value, and a few even saw double-digit growth, notably SPDR PORTFOLIO S&P 500 VALUE ETF and SPDR PORTFOLIO S&P 500 GROWTH ETF. As always with the stock market, changes are expected, and investors and traders must be prepared to adjust their portfolios accordingly.
