Moon Capital Management LP's Q4 2022 Report: Notable Stock Changes and Investment Strategy
Ava Hoppe | 18 April, 2023
Moon Capital Management LP recently released their third-quarter (Q3) and fourth-quarter (Q4) 2022 13F Holdings Comparison report. The report reveals the changes in holdings of this fund over the two quarters. According to the report, the fund made significant shifts in its portfolio during the Q4 2022 quarter.
One of the most notable changes was the increase in the fund's holdings of the SPDR S&P 500 ETF TR (SPY). During Q3 2022, the fund did not hold any shares in SPY. However, in Q4 2022, the fund acquired 150,000 shares, worth $57,364, representing a 100% change. This move by the fund could indicate a bullish outlook on the US market, specifically the S&P 500 stocks.
The fund also increased its holdings of the iShares Gold Trust (IAU) during Q4 2022. The fund added 7,746 shares of IAU, valued at $4,795, resulting in a 9.8% increase in the value of this stock in the fund's portfolio. With rising inflation and geopolitical uncertainty, the addition of more gold to their portfolio by Moon Capital Management LP could be a hedge against market volatility.
Another significant change was the increase in the fund's holding of BorgWarner Inc. (BWA). The fund increased its shares in the company from 41,200 to 135,800, resulting in a 322.4% increase in the value of BWA in the fund's portfolio. This move could be attributed to the projected growth and positive outlook of the automotive industry.
Meanwhile, the fund also decreased its holdings in some companies. For example, the fund reduced its holdings in Autoliv Inc. (ALV) from 92,933 shares to 34,533 shares, resulting in a 57.3% decrease in the value of ALV in the fund's portfolio. This move may indicate the fund's belief that the company's growth prospects are limited, and the fund may have shifted its investment focus towards other companies in the automotive industry.
In the Q4 2022 quarter, Moon Capital Management LP also decreased its position in Aptiv PLC (APTV), Autonation Inc. (AN), and Lithia Mtrs Inc. (LAD). With Aptiv, the fund reduced its holdings by 19,200 shares, resulting in a decrease of 12.9% in the value of the stock in the fund's portfolio. Similarly, the fund decreased its holdings in Autonation Inc. (AN) by 2,800 shares, resulting in an 8.9% decrease in the value of AN in the fund's portfolio. Finally, the fund reduced its holdings of Lithia Mtrs Inc (LAD) by 1,000 shares, resulting in a 13% decrease in the value of the LAD stock in the fund's portfolio.
The fund, however, maintained its position in VanEck ETF Trust, holding steady its shares in Gold Miners ETF (GDX) and Junior Gold Miners ETF (GDXJ) in both quarters, although GDXJ experienced a slight increase of 19% in its value in the fund's portfolio.
In conclusion, the Q4 2022 Moon Capital Management LP 13F Holdings Comparison report showcases the fund's changes in its portfolio over the two quarters, indicating its investment strategy and analysis of various market trends. The report indicates Moon Capital Management LP's bullish outlook on the S&P 500 index and the automobile industry, while also showcasing its continued focus on gold ETFs.
