In a significant development for the protein industry, specialty protein products manufacturer Demakes Enterprises has received a majority equity investment from TowerBrook Capital Partners. This partnership aims to build upon Demakes' century-long legacy of providing healthy and convenient protein products to retailers and consumers.
Demakes Enterprises, a fourth-generation family business founded in 1914, is based in Lynn, Massachusetts. The company boasts a diverse range of over 250 specialty protein products across three prominent brands: Old Neighborhood, Waterhill Organics, and Thin N' Trim. Additionally, it offers private label options. Demakes has capitalized on consumers' increasing demand for "better-for-you" products by focusing on organic and antibiotic-free options, as well as convenient ready-to-eat and ready-to-cook items. The company's use of high-pressure processing technology ensures exceptional shelf life and food safety.
The partnership with TowerBrook, an international investment firm with offices in New York and London, will enable Demakes to further strengthen its position as a critical supplier to grocery retailers and foodservice distributors. TowerBrook's expertise in scaling and growing consumer brands sets the stage for an exciting phase of expansion for Demakes. The company, under the continued leadership of CEO Andrew Demakes, Vice President of Sales Elias Demakes, and Vice President of Plant Operations Timothy Demakes, will leverage TowerBrook's support while retaining a significant minority stake.
TowerBrook's Managing Director, Michael Recht, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting Demakes' track record of delivering innovative protein products that cater to consumers' evolving preferences. Recht emphasized TowerBrook's commitment to leveraging its experience in scaling family-owned businesses to foster both organic growth and strategic acquisitions in the years to come.
Andrew Demakes echoed Recht's sentiments, emphasizing TowerBrook's suitability as a partner due to the firm's success in scaling family-owned businesses and extensive knowledge of the food industry. He expressed excitement about expanding distribution channels and bringing Demakes' high-quality, innovative protein products to a wider customer base across the United States.
The transaction was facilitated by funds managed by the Credit Group of Ares Management, which acted as the administrative agent and provided term loan financing. Benefit Street Partners, Willow Tree Credit Partners, and Monroe Capital, LLC, also contributed to the financing. Wells Fargo Bank National Association will provide an asset-backed revolving line of credit for Demakes going forward.
Stifel served as TowerBrook's financial advisor, while Sidley Austin provided legal counsel. On the other hand, Estabrook Advisors acted as Demakes' financial advisor, with ArentFox Schiff serving as legal counsel.
