A Closer Look at Global Thematic Partners' Q1 2020 vs. Q2 2020 13F Holdings Comparison

Ava Hoppe | 23 April, 2023

Global Thematic Partners, LLC is a respected American investment management company, with a track record of investing in some of the biggest companies across the world. In this blog, we'll take a closer look at the first and second-quarter holdings of this company in 2020, to determine which companies saw the most significant changes in investments.

First, it's worth noting that some of the companies, including Alibaba Group Holding Ltd, Adobe Inc, and McDonald's Corp saw a 100% reduction in their holdings, which means that Global Thematic Partners no longer invested in them. Interestingly, Mercadolibre Inc, a popular e-commerce website that operates in Latin America, saw an increase in shares from 27,573 to 23,755, which is a decrease of 73.8% in value from $13,471,000 to $23,417,000.

Another notable company that saw a decrease in shares was Yum China Holdings Inc, which operates fast-food restaurants, including KFC and Pizza Hut in China. The shares went from 388,916 to 323,507, which indicates a decrease in value from $16,579,000 to $15,551,000. This is a surprising shift considering the increasing popularity of fast food in China.

On the other hand, there were companies like JD.com Inc, which saw an increase in shares from 308,868 to 252,275, indicating a 21.4% increase in value from $12,509,000 to $15,181,000. Similarly, Jumia Technologies AG, an African-focused e-commerce company, saw an increase in shares from 623,133 to 741,117, representing a 123.6% increase in value from $1,820,000 to $4,069,000.

One of the most significant shifts, however, was observed in Vipshop Holdings Limited, which operates an online discount retailer in China. The shares of Vipshop Holdings Limited decreased tremendously from 1,532,949 to 578,241, indicating a 51.8% drop in value from $23,884,000 to $11,513,000. This is a huge drop in investments in just one quarter and can be attributed to several factors, including market forces and changing investment strategies.

In conclusion, Global Thematic Partners, LLC demonstrated significant changes in holdings in Q1 and Q2 of 2020. While some companies saw an increase in shares, others saw a decrease, and a few companies were entirely removed from the portfolio. It remains to be seen which companies will be added or removed in the next quarter, but for now, investors can use this data to make informed decisions.
