In the third quarter of 2022, Governors Lane LP made some significant shifts in its investment portfolio. By the fourth quarter of the year, the hedge fund had made even bigger moves, with increases in holdings for some companies and decreases in others. These changes provide insights into the investment strategy of the fund, the performance of the companies in its portfolio, and the overall state of the market.
One of the most significant increases in holdings was for Coupa Software Inc. In the third quarter, the fund held 3 million shares in the company, but by the fourth quarter, this had risen to 45 million shares, representing an increase of 1,773.9%. This paints a positive outlook for Coupa Software, which provides cloud-based spend management software to help businesses control their expenses. The fund also increased its holdings in Microsoft Corp and Workday Inc, by 115.4% and 53.6% respectively.
Governors Lane LP also made some adjustments to its holdings in the healthcare sector. The fund reduced its holdings in HCA Healthcare Inc, a healthcare services provider, by 22.1%, due to a decline in the company's stock performance. It also reduced its holdings in Humana Inc, an American health insurance company, by 53.4%.
On the other hand, the fund increased its holdings in Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc. and Horizon Therapeutics Pub L by 37.1% and 143.2%, respectively. This positive sentiment towards Hilton could be a reflection of the expected recovery of the hotel industry after the pandemic, while Horizon's increase in holdings could be attributed to the company's consistent performance in recent months.
The fund also made some interesting moves in the tech sector. It increased its holdings in Amazon.com Inc by 404.4%, making it one of the largest positions in the portfolio. The fund also acquired a significant number of shares in Activision Blizzard Inc, purchasing 508,631 shares, the same amount as it held in the previous quarter. This indicates confidence in the future of the gaming industry.
In the financial sector, Governors Lane LP increased its holdings in Wells Fargo Co New and Vanguard Index FDS by 3.7% and 100%, respectively. The fund added a new position in American Intl Group Inc, purchasing 159,000 shares in the company in the fourth quarter.
The fund also made some interesting acquisitions in special purpose acquisition companies (SPACs) such as RCAC, RXT, and Splash Acquisition Corp. These companies are shells that go public with the intention of merging with an existing company. The fund's investments indicate confidence in the potential of these SPACs to deliver value.
In summary, Governors Lane LP made some strategic adjustments to its holdings in the fourth quarter of 2022. The fund increased its positions in companies in the tech and hospitality sectors while reducing its holdings in healthcare. Its interest in SPACs suggests its willingness to explore innovative investment opportunities. These moves reflect the fund's bullish outlook on the companies in its portfolio and its appetite for growth.
