Houston-based private equity firm, Black Bay Energy Capital, has announced its acquisition of Merichem Company's technology business unit, which includes Merichem Process Technologies and Merichem Catalyst Products. The newly formed entity will be known as Merichem Technologies. This acquisition marks Black Bay's entry into the sulfur-treating platform and will be led by Cyndie Fredrick, former SVP & General Manager of Merichem Company.
Merichem Company, founded in 1945, is a global leader in sulfur removal, caustic treating, and spent caustic treatment technologies. While Merichem Company will retain its caustic services business, the technology business unit will now operate under the name Merichem Technologies. The company offers a wide range of sulfur treating technologies and solutions, including LO-CAT®, FIBER FILM®, THIOLEX®, MERICAT®, MERICON®, and proprietary chemical catalysts.
Merichem Technologies will provide design, engineering, fabrication, R&D, and implementation of both chemical catalysts and mechanical solutions for the treatment of sulfur and other impurities across various industries such as renewables, gas treating, downstream and midstream. The new entity will be led by Cyndie Fredrick as CEO, along with Rene Campos as CFO, Jeff Gomach as SVP Technology, and William Rouleau as SVP Catalysts.
Cyndie Fredrick, CEO of Merichem Technologies, expressed excitement about the partnership with Black Bay, stating, "Merichem Technologies team has successfully deployed highly engineered & patented technologies, chemical catalysts, and mechanical solutions to various end markets." She highlighted their expertise in LNG, midstream oil and gas, refining, renewable feedstocks, biogas production, geothermal energy, and chemical manufacturing.
The partnership between Black Bay and Merichem Technologies aims to accelerate growth and expand the portfolio of solutions to assist clients in achieving their operational and environmental goals. The sulfur treatment industry is vast and spans multiple end markets, and Merichem Technologies aims to become a comprehensive, industry-agnostic sulfur treatment solutions provider.
Kendra Lee, Chairman and CEO of Merichem Company, expressed her excitement about the divestiture and the opportunity to work with the Merichem Technologies team and investors as they take the technology businesses to the next level.
The primary legal advisor for Black Bay was Fishman Haygood, while Merichem Company's financial and legal advisors were Grace Matthews and Hughes Arrell LLP, respectively.
