Investment Firm Filament LLC Increases Holdings in Gold and Real Estate ETFs
Ava Hoppe | 5 May, 2023
Filament LLC, a registered investment advisory firm based in the United States, recently filed its Form 13F with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), detailing its holdings as of Q3 2020. According to the filing, the firm made some significant changes to its portfolio, increasing its positions in Vanguard Total Stock Market, Vanguard FTSE All World Ex US, and Vanguard FTSE Emerging Markets ETFs. However, the most notable changes were its increased holdings in gold and real estate ETFs, namely Sprott Physical Gold ETV, Vanguard REIT, and Vanguard Global Ex US Real Estate ETF.
Filament LLC's holdings in Sprott Physical Gold ETV were reported to be worth $16.38 million by the end of Q3 2020. The firm did not have any shares in the gold ETF in the previous quarter, so this represents a new position for the firm in this sector. Meanwhile, the firm's positions in Vanguard REIT and Vanguard Global Ex US Real Estate ETF increased by 4.7% and 5.1%, respectively, with these holdings worth $4.05 million and $2.67 million as of the end of Q3 2020.
One possible reason for Filament LLC's increased interest in gold and real estate ETFs could be the ongoing uncertainty in the current economic climate. With the COVID-19 pandemic still raging on and the US presidential election looming, investors are looking for safer investment options beyond traditional equities. Gold has always been a popular safe-haven asset and has shown resilience even during tough economic times. Similarly, real estate is considered a stable and long-term investment, with income-generating potential that can provide a hedge against inflation.
Apart from these new positions, Filament LLC also made some notable changes to its existing positions. The firm increased its holdings in Zillow and Docusign by 76.4% and 25%, respectively, with values worth $37.18 million and $12.58 million by the end of Q3 2020. On the other hand, the firm reduced its holdings in Eli Lilly & Company by 10% and Microsoft by 0.6%. Filament LLC's holdings in Tesla Motors also surged by 97.4% during the quarter.
Overall, Filament LLC's Q3 2020 13F filing reflects a cautious but optimistic investment stance positioning the company for possibly volatile times ahead. By investing in gold and real estate ETFs alongside tech stocks and other equities, the firm has diversified its portfolio and mitigated some of its risk. Followers of the firm's investments will continue to keep an eye on its moves into the next quarter.
