Kinterra Capital Corp., a private equity firm specializing in critical minerals assets, has announced its acquisition of a majority stake in the White Pine North copper project in Michigan. The project, one of the largest independent copper development projects in the United States, holds significant strategic value for Kinterra Capital and is expected to contribute to the energy transition.
White Pine North is located in a Tier 1 jurisdiction that offers regulatory certainty, making it an attractive investment opportunity. With approximately 5.7 billion lbs of copper and a net present value of US$821 million, the project has a projected mine life of 22 years. It also benefits from a well-defined resource, proximity to existing infrastructure, low holding costs, and significant expansion opportunities.
Through its subsidiary, Kinterra Copper USA LLC, Kinterra Capital has entered into a joint venture with Highland Copper Company Inc. to acquire a 66% interest in the White Pine North project. This transaction provides Kinterra Copper with controlling interest and majority board representation, enabling the company to leverage its technical expertise to de-risk and optimize the project. Key value creation initiatives will focus on project optimization, obtaining key project permits, progressing baseline studies, advancing detailed engineering, and gaining strong stakeholder support.
Cheryl Brandon, Co-Founder, and Co-Managing Partner of Kinterra Capital, expressed excitement about the partnership with Highland on the White Pine North project. She emphasized the project's potential to contribute to the energy transition and the numerous initiatives that Kinterra Capital will implement to drive significant value creation for all stakeholders. The company is committed to progressing the project in Michigan, a state that has shown a demonstrated commitment to electrification.
Kamal Toor, Co-Founder, and Co-Managing Partner of Kinterra Capital, highlighted the strategic value of White Pine North as a domestic source of copper for the United States. Given the projected increase in demand for energy transition materials, the United States will need to import the majority of the copper it requires. By supplying domestic copper at scale, White Pine North plays a crucial role in addressing the structural deficit in copper and enhances Kinterra Capital's portfolio.
Kinterra Capital is a private equity firm focused on investing in critical minerals and strategic infrastructure to accelerate the energy transition. The company leverages its technical and transactional expertise to identify and manage investments that create value for key stakeholders. Through meaningful partnerships, Kinterra Capital aims to enhance the communities in which it operates. Their investment approach prioritizes innovative ideation, rigorous analysis, and execution excellence to create a more sustainable future.
In conclusion, Kinterra Capital's acquisition of a majority stake in the White Pine North copper project marks a significant milestone in their portfolio and the energy transition. With its abundant copper resources and favorable jurisdiction, the project holds immense potential for value creation. Kinterra Capital's strategic expertise and commitment to sustainable investments position them well to drive the success and optimization of the White Pine North project.
