As the world is dealing with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the stock markets have experienced an unprecedented level of volatility. Every industry and sector has faced its unique set of challenges, and the investment industry is not an exception. In this blog, we will take a closer look at the Q4 2019 vs. Q1 2020 13F holdings comparison of Miles Capital, Inc. and provide an insight into the changes that have taken place.
Starting with the top holdings, Vanguard Total Bond Market (BND) saw an increase of 0.2% in shares and 2.2% in value, standing at 114,869 shares and $9,804,000 respectively. On the other hand, iShares iBoxx High Yield Corp (HYG) faced a decrease of 0.6% in shares and 12.9% in value, standing at 115,966 shares and $8,937,000, respectively.
The biggest difference was seen in the holdings of Vanguard FTSE Developed ETF (VEA), with an increase of 123.4% in shares and 68.8% in value, standing at 146,445 shares and $4,882,000, respectively. Microsoft Corp (MSFT) also experienced a considerable increase of 7.5% in shares and 7.7% in value, standing at 19.379 shares and $3.056,000, respectively.
Moving to the biggest movers within their portfolio, iShares Russell 2000 ETF (IWM) saw a remarkable increase of 96.1% in shares and 96.1% in value, standing at 17,812 shares and $2,039,000. Likewise, Vanguard Short-Term Treasury ETF (VGSH) had an increase of 181.3% in shares and 189.3% in value, standing at 12,104 shares and $755,000, respectively. It is worth noting here that among all the holdings, Target Corp. (TGT) had no holdings in Q4 of 2019, but by Q1 of 2020, the company held 7,515 shares worth $699,000.
However, not all of Miles Capital, Inc.'s holdings experienced growth. Vanguard High DVD Yield ETF (VYM) faced a decrease of 2.9% in shares and 22.9% in value, standing at 22,737 shares and $1,609,000, respectively. iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV) had a decrease of 9.7% in shares and 27.7% in value, standing at 5,919 shares and $1,529,000, respectively.
Amongst the other players, Verizon Communications Inc (VZ) experienced a decrease of 0.08% in shares and 12.5% in value, standing at 8,425 shares and $453,000, respectively. Chevron Corp. (CVX) saw a decrease of 5.4% in shares but a drastic drop of 43% in value, standing at 10,827 shares and $785,000, respectively.
To summarize, while some holdings in Miles Capital, Inc.'s portfolio experienced growth, several underwent a period of volatility during Q4 of 2019 and Q1 of 2020 amidst the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, despite the disruptions and shake-up, the portfolio as a whole managed to hold steady. As we now move into the second half of 2020, we can expect further changes in the portfolio, and it remains to be seen which companies will come out on top in the end.
