Tortoise Capital Advisors Q3 vs. Q4 13F Holdings Comparison: Which Companies are Winning and Losing Investment?

Ava Hoppe | 6 May, 2023

Investors and market analysts frequently evaluate the 13-f filings of asset managers to gain insights into the holdings and changes in the allocation of their portfolios. Recently, Tortoise Capital Advisors, L.L.C. released its latest 13-f holding report, comparing Q3 2022 with Q4 2022. Tortoise Capital Advisors had a total market value of $4.1 billion at the end of Q4 2022, representing a 4.43% increase from the prior quarter. However, their shareholdings underwent some notable changes in this period. In this article, we'll be examining the changes and which companies are winning and losing investment from Tortoise Capital Advisors.

One of the top gainers in Tortoise Capital Advisors' portfolio was Pembina Pipeline Corporation (PPL.TO). The company's shares rose by an extreme 259.2%, from 1,447,439 to 4,650,858 in Q4 2022. This impressive rise in shareholdings has been attributed to the company's impressive quarterly results, strategic business moves, and satisfying investors with regular dividend payments. Demand for natural gas has been increasing, and Bloomberg analysts predict that prices could surge to $13 per mmbtu. Therefore, it is no surprise that Pembina Pipeline Corporation is garnering increased attention from investors and asset managers.

Another company that witnessed an impressive increase was Enlink Midstream, LLC (ENLC). Tortoise Capital Advisors increased its shareholdings in the company by 40.1%, from 12,015,677 to 12,168,521. This impressive spike may be attributed to the company's decision to acquire Consolidated Natural Gas Transmission (CNT) in Pennsylvania, which would certainly enrich their position in the natural gas market.

Pages could be written about the several companies that Tortoise Capital Advisors decreased investments in, but Cheniere Energy Inc. (LNG) and Cheniere Energy Partners LP (CQP) are worth taking note of. Tortoise Capital Advisors decreased its position in Cheniere Energy by 15.5%, from 3,848,398 to 3,596,099, while reducing investments in Cheniere Energy Partners by 19.3%, from 444,380 to 336,331. This decrease in investment from an influential asset management company like Tortoise Capital Advisors is indeed a matter of concern for investors in Cheniere and Cheniere Energy Partners.

Energy Transfer LP (ET) equities slumped in the market in Q4 2022, resulting in Tortoise Capital Advisors decreasing its investment in the company from 40,128,015 to 36,753,842, a reduction of 1.4%. This move by Tortoise Capital Advisors might indicate that Energy Transfer LP may not be a profitable investment, at least in the short run, resulting in reduced shares, which surely raised an alarm for the company and industry spectators.

Another company to note is Antero Midstream Corporation (AM). Tortoise Capital Advisors increased its shareholdings in the company by 17.5%, from 2,556,423 to 2,556,118. As a result of this tactical investment by Tortoise Capital Advisors, Antero Midstream Corporation's shares climbed higher, reflecting investor confidence in the company.

In conclusion, it is vital to note that Tortoise Capital Advisors' decisions to invest or divest in any company should not be the sole criterion for investors' decisions. Those who need to stay aware of market trends, understand the financials of companies, and analyze future growth prospects before making any decisions should always invest with an eye towards the overall market's situation. Furthermore, Tortoise Capital Advisors' decision is very specific to their portfolio, and changes therein are not necessarily an indication of the company or industry's performance in the broader market. Investors must always perform a thorough analysis based on their financial objectives and risk appetite before making investment decisions.
