Analyzing Q3 and Q4 2022 Investment Trends: Technology and Healthcare Thrive, While Some Energy and Technology Companies Drop.
Ava Hoppe | 20 April, 2023
As the world is seemingly returning to a sense of normalcy, it's important to take a step back and analyze the changes that have taken place during the last quarter. This is especially true in the investment world, and Alethea Capital Management, LLC's recent 13F Holdings Comparison for Q3 2022 and Q4 2022 provides us with great insight.
One of the biggest changes that can be seen is the significant increase in the value of shares of AXSOME THERAPEUTICS INC. In Q3 2022, the company had 788,263 shares worth $35,172,000, and in Q4 2022, they had 785,683 shares worth $60,599,000. This marks a huge increase of 72.3% in the value of shares. AVIDITY BIOSCIENCES INC also saw a good increase, with the company's shares increasing in value by 34.3%.
However, not every company saw such good fortunes. The holdings of KURA ONCOLOGY INC, ILLINOIS TOOL WKS INC and MEDTRONIC PLC decreased by 9.8%, 22% and 54.1%, respectively. This shows that even though the markets have been doing well, not every company has benefited equally.
It's also worth noting that there were many major players that stayed steady throughout the quarter. Apple Inc, for example, saw a decrease of only 8%, while BANK AMERICA CORP and JPMORGAN CHASE & CO only saw slight fluctuations in their holdings.
What's interesting is the rise of the technology sector, which has never been far from the spotlight. Alphabet Inc, MICROSOFT CORP and QUALCOMM INC all had changes in their holdings. However, Alphabet Inc saw a decrease in the value of its shares by 14.9%, while Microsoft Corp saw an increase of only 3.1%. Qualcomm Inc had no holdings in Q3 2022, but by Q4 2022, they had 2,231,000 shares worth $245,000,000.
The healthcare sector also saw some significant changes, with CIDARA THERAPEUTICS INC and AMGEN INC seeing an increase in their holdings, along with a corresponding increase in the value of their shares. While some might have expected the healthcare sector to take a hit, given the ongoing pandemic, these holdings paint a different picture.
Another significant change occurred in the energy sector. EXXON MOBIL CORP and DUKE ENERGY CORP NEW saw decreases in the value of their holdings, while FIRSTENERGY CORP and CHEVRON CORP NEW had no holdings in Q3 2022, but by Q4 2022, they had 10,989,000 shares worth $407,000,000, and 2,384,000 shares worth $343,000,000 respectively.
In conclusion, the 13F holdings comparison for Q3 and Q4 2022 shows that the investment world is continuously fluctuating but also picking itself up from the global pandemic. While some companies might have suffered, others have thrived, particularly in the technology and healthcare sectors. It will be interesting to see how these trends continue to evolve in the months and years to come.
